Why Drive is releasing only on Netflix when it could have released in both theaters and later on Netflix , and could earn more revenue ? Lets find out .
Drive was scheduled to release in March 2018 but couldn't make it to the theaters because of multiple reasons. Some reasons which came into the limelight are :-
1. Pending VFX work - During the delay , whenever the lead stars of the film were asked about the reason for the delay , the only reason was 'Pending VFX work'
2. Karan Johar , the producer , not being happy with the final product and wanted the Director Tarun Mansukhani to reshoot some scenes
3. Karan Johar after the debacle of KALANK and SOTY 2 in 2019 , doesn't want to take a risk of releasing a film in theaters , in which he himself doesn't have faith . A box office failure for DRIVE would also spoil KARAN's relationship with his film distributors
4. NETFLIX has paid additional amount for DRIVE since it is releasing originally on Netflix . Had DRIVE released in theaters first , it would have fetched lesser amount from the sale of DIGITAL RIGHTS .
5. Since , film was delayed for over 1.5 year , even the trade members of Bollywood felt that film is not worth it . As a result , even if Karan had decided to release it in theaters , it would have fetched a relatively low amount from sale of theatrical rights .
